It is designed to protect the wearer against head injuries; however, it will not prevent crashes or potential injury-causing situations. Bicycle helmet can reduce the risk of head injuries by as much as 85%.
Help your child develop the helmet habit early. Insist that your child wear a helmet beginning with the very first ride—be it on your bike in a child seat or trailer, a big wheel or tricycle. Putting on and wearing a helmet should be second nature to everyone who drives a bicycle. So, don’t forget to set a good example by wearing your helmet.

Helmet Selection
Look for an ANSI, ASTM or Snell label inside the helmet: This assures that the helmet has passed a rigid set of safety standards.
Have your child help select their helmet. Look and appeal is important for peer acceptance and willing usage.
Select the smallest size helmet that fits the head without any accompanying foam pads. Heads and helmets come in a variety of shapes. Try several brands to achieve a suitable, comfortable fit. The helmet should cover the majority of the forehead, with only an inch or so of skin above the eyebrows and it should have little movement when rocked fore and aft or side-to-side.

Helmet Fit
For the helmet to do its job, it must be worn properly. It must be level on the head with the chin straps securely fastened.Use thick or thin foam pads to customize the fit.
Adjust the straps. Begin with the ear straps—front and back, each side considered separately. Each ear strap should meet at a point at just under the ear lobe, with on loose play in the straps. The chin strap should be snug, with room for only one or two fingers between the strap and your chin.

Why Is It Important To Know More Than How To Balance?
Bicycle-related injuries are a major cause of injury hospitalization for children five to fourteen years of age. The majority of these injuries occur close to home in parks, bike paths or driveways—not on streets. Most children are injured falling from their bikes or colliding with fixed objects, such as curbs or trees. Bicycle crashes usually do not involve cars. When cars are involved, the two most common riding situations for crashes are driving against traffic and riding out of a driveway or sidewalk into the street.

Bicycle Driver Responsibilities
*Always wear a helmet
*Obey traffic laws
*Choose and maintain a safe bicycle

Toward safer cycliing

Today I participated a bicycle class that taugh us about riding bicycle safely.
I will post about this class knowledge that I got.
Hope everyone can join riding bicycle and riding safer.

First of all, toward safer cycling:

SAFE RIDING PRACTICES
Bicycle riding is fun for people of all ages, from older adults to young children. With the growing number of people participating in this activity, the need for understanding laws and safety rules regarding bicycle riding has grown is importance. Safe riding practices are essential to enjoyable bicycling.

Parents are especially important in developing safe riding practices in youngsters because, by setting a good example, you help determine how they are going to act. Parents are by law responsible for the actions of their children and shall not knowingly permit them to violate any bicycle regulations.

Older riders can also set good examples for younger riders who may not be familiar with the importance of avoiding danger; through safe riding practices.

The bicyclist who has learned to ride safely has trained himself to observe the following safe riding practices.

At busy intersections where there is no traffic light, get off your bike and ‘walk’ it across.

Carry parcels, bundles or other objects in baskets, racks, or saddlebags.
Never ‘stunt’ or race with others in traffic.
Keep both hands on the handlebars and be ready to stop in any emergency.
Use your bell or horn to warn others, not to frighten them.

A SAFE BICYCLE SHOULD HAVE:
\\incompletely(*Either hand or coaster brakes are required)

---------------------------------------

THIS IS THE LAW
Traffic signs and rules apply to you when you are riding your bike.
When riding your bicycle, sit on the seat only.
Keep to the right side of the street staying close to the curb.
If a bicycle path is provided close to the roadway, use it.
When coming out from an alley, stop and give the right-of-way to all pedestrians approaching on the sidewalk and all vehicles approaching on the street.
Never hitch rides. Do not ride close behind a car or truck, there is danger on all sides of any vehicle.
Never ride more than two abreast.
Never ride a bicycle on a sidewalk in a business district.
Never carry loads which keep you from having at least one hand on the handlebars at all times.
Bicycles may carry only the number of people they are designed for children can be carried safely in special seats attached to the bicycle.
Be sure your brakes are in good working order. They must be able to make the braked wheels skid on dry, level, clean pavement.
Equip your bicycle with a horn, bell or other warning signal. Sirens and whistles are not permitted.
If you ride at night, have a headlight bright enough to be seen at a distance of at least 500 feet. A red reflector on the rear of the bicycle should be visible for a distance of at least 300 feet. (Light clothing increases visibility.)
Always ride slowly and carefully in heavy traffic. Do not speed at any time.
Never ride bicycles on interstate highways.

---------------------------------------

SIGNS FOR SAFETY
Bicyclists, like other drivers, need to know and obey traffic signs and signals. Some of the basic signs are:
\\incompletely

SIGNAL YOUR INTENTIONS
Hand signals should be used to let others using the roadway know what you are going to do. Use hand signals before turning or stopping.
\\incompletely

SAFETY
IS NO ACCIDENT

In addition to the special rules which apply to all bicyclists, there are general laws which apply to all riders, whether on bicycles, motorcycles, automobiles or any other vehicle.

YOU MUST
Come to a full stop before entering main streets or highways.
Stop, look both ways and proceed carefully at stop signs.
Always give right-of-way to other vehicles and pedestrians.
Pass on the left of all vehicles moving in your direction.
Never pass until you see that the way is clear for a safe distance.
Never pass another vehicle going in your direction on a hill, curve or at an intersection.
Give hand signals when changing directions, the same hand signals used by the drivers of automobiles.
Do not zig-zag or weave in and out of traffic.

League of American Bicyclists

Setting the National Standard in Bicycle Education Programs

Does the thought of bicycling on the street make you nervous?

Would you like to learn techniques to teach your child to ride a bicycle safely?

Are you interested in learning to change a tire or other basics of bicycle maintenance?

------------
If you said "yes" to any of these questions, then you should enroll in a League of American Bicyclists BikeEd course.
